John Brown Francis Principal David Cluff heeded the call Monday when told to report to the school administration building, but when he got there he learned his boss had been called off and he would need to return. As it turned out, it was all a ploy to get Cluff out of the school he’s run for the past four years. Cluff is retiring this year and returning to Stevensville, MT where he and his wife have a home. When Cluff returned to JBF Monday morning the school was amazingly quiet. He was ushered into the auditorium where students and faculty were gathered to present him gifts including a framed JBF made from 252 thumb prints of the students and yearbook signed by the students. “This is as good as it gets,” Cluff told the assembly. He talked briefly about arriving at the school not knowing anyone and finding such “kind, caring and respectful teachers.” He said he then got to meet the students and they were “warm hearted and the most remarkable children in the world. I leave with the best memories…the perfect place and the perfect job, I found it.” As students filed back to the their classrooms, Cluff called them out by name and gave them high-fives. Many hugged him. Asked what he thought about the School Committee’s decision to close JBF and reopen it as an early childhood center, Cluff said the “quality of education [at JBF] is superb.” He added that JBF is a neighborhood school and with the aging of the community and sale of homes to young families he sees the future need for the school.
