Hailey Randall, a freshman at Toll Gate, was recognized by the superintendent and the School Committee last Tuesday for winning the Rhode Island Art Educators 2020 Youth Art Month Post Card Contest. Her winning “Power of Art” postcard features a car losing art supplies out of its trunk while traveling along the Pell Bridge that has various paintings on either side. The theme, Randall said, was a journey through art that also incorporated Rhode Island. “I was excited because I haven't done that much with art, but I really like it,” Randall said about winning the award. Her art teacher, Heather Place, pictured with Hailey, has taught in Warwick for nine years. She was also recognized at the School Committee meeting Tuesday. Place shared how proud she was of Hailey winning the award. “She’s so deserving,” Place said. “She’s a hard worker and she’s a talented artist and she’s certainly deserving of this award.” Place said she gave her students criteria for the contest, including the words “Youth Art Month,” something representing Rhode Island and relating to a journey through art. Hailey won $250 and her teacher was awarded $500 in art supplies. (Warwick Beacon photo)
