Timothy Gardner of Troop 1 Warwick has climbed through the ranks of scouting and now is reaching to achieve the ultimate rank of Eagle. As an Eagle project, he set the goal of collecting 500 pairs of socks to be distributed at the soup kitchen operated by St. Charles Church on Dexter Street in Providence. He started doing community service at the kitchen as a sixth grader and now is in his fourth year of volunteering. To collect the socks, Tim set up collection boxes at a number of Warwick businesses. The word got out quickly and soon not only were people donating socks but also one company stepped up with more than 1,000 pairs of socks. On Monday night members of the troop and their parents joined at the Heritage Christian Fellowship Church to sort through and package more than 2,500 pairs of socks. The socks will be distributed next week at the kitchen. Mayor Joseph Solomon stopped by the church Monday night to congratulate the Pilgrim High School sophomore and thank those who had come together to assist Timothy with his project.
