When the local Chapter 44 of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) that meets at St. Rita Church in Oakland Beach learned that some foster children were using plastic garbage bags to pack up their belongings when moving to a new foster home, they launched a drive to buy them duffle bags. Each TOPS member gave $25. Additional help came from St. Rita parishioners, and not only was the chapter able to purchase 55 bags but also fill them with a blanket, toiletries and other items. The bags were delivered last week to Children’s Friends and Family Service that runs the foster program. Nicole Johnson-Morais, chapter leader, said the project was inspired by member Amy Bernard, who fostered Jyshawn and has since adopted him. Packing the bags in Nicole Johnson-Morais’ pick-up for delivery to Children’s Friend and Service are (from left) Johnson-Morais, her daughter Alexia, Jyshawn and Amy Bernard, Jean Belleavoine and Rebecca Hamblin. There are nine TOPS Rhode Island chapters and, as Johnson-Morais points out, they are always looking for new members. Additional information is available at TOPS.org. (Warwick Beacon photo)
