Warwick native and Community College of Rhode Island student David Cabeceiras is among a field of 30 student-athletes in Rhode Island selected as 2019 Scholar-Athlete award-winners. Recipients were honored at a State House reception hosted by House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello. Scholar-Athletes are chosen based on a combination of their grade point average (GPA), athletic performance and ability to show exemplary character while possessing the leadership qualities necessary to succeed both on and off the playing field. Cabeceiras started 20 of 32 games this season for CCRI’s men’s basketball team, helping lead the Knights to a 28-4 finish. The well-rounded small forward ranked among the Top 25 in the nation in three-point field-goal percentage (43.7) and averaged 8.8 points per game. Cabeceiras will graduate from CCRI this year. National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) competition promotes the well-being of student-athletes, providing them with the skills to excel in the classroom and emphasizing the importance of graduating in addition to winning on the field. NJCAA student-athletes at CCRI learn leadership, confidence, discipline and teamwork through sports.
