Saint Elizabeth Community raises $100,000 in style


The 11th annual Auction and Gala that benefited the Saint Elizabeth Community was more than just a lavish social event.

Rose Bids 2012 will long be remembered as a night right out of Hollywood.

In fact, the Crowne Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom and adjacent areas were transformed into what you’d expect to find on that night that’s reserved for the Oscars.

There was a Walk of Fame, so to speak, a special area where people could have their photo taken – for free.

There were portable watering holes where people stopped for their favorite liquid refreshment and made small talk with other people who came to support the Saint Elizabeth Community that President/CEO Steven J. Horowitz said has 10 locations and 1,600 individuals that will benefit from the event.

There were food stations galore. They ranged from an antipasto to Mediterranean, to carving to pasta, all of which were manned by the Crowne’s chefs.

But this gala – a.k.a. Rose Bids goes Hollywood presented by Calson Corporation – had much more meaning than an Oscar, Emmy, or even an ESPY Award.

There were special centerpieces designed by the organizing committee and flowers donated by Donald R. Blouin Jr., who owns and operates The Blou Orchid Florist and Designs of Warren.

The entire evening was coordinated by a 36-person committee that was co-chaired by Mark Kershaw and Michael Sutila and was highlighted by a silent and live auction that will directly benefit the many programs and services of the Saint Elizabeth Community.

An estimated 440 people paid $150 per ticket, were dressed in cocktail party attire and enjoyed a caloric collection of foods and individually plated dessert like berry tartlet, cheesecake garnished with a lemon gellied candy and chocolate mousse cake. The evening raised approximately $100,000.

“This was our one big fundraiser,” said Mary Rosetti, director of community outreach for the Saint Elizabeth Community. “Proceeds from this event are used for a number of programs throughout our community.”

Geri Manning, the philanthropy officer for Saint Elizabeth Community, said that the silent auction featured 92 different items “and something for everybody” that had bids ranging from $35 to $40 to $500.

Among the most popular live auction items were trips, one to San Francisco wine country, an escape to Ireland, frolic with family and friends in the heart of Maine and luxury in Venice and Bellagia.

The live auction had two opportunities to cheer on the New England Patriots in style and a prize entitled Lights, Camera ... Emmy Awards, which was a trip to Hollywood. Manning reported that the live auction bids ranged from $1,300 to $6,900.
