Sarah A. (Allen) McDermott


Sarah A. (Allen) McDermott, 89, formerly of Warwick, passed away January 3, 2013 at Riverview Health Care in Coventry. She was the wife of the late Walter J. McDermott.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Herman F. and Margaret E. (Fortini) Allen. Mrs. McDermott was a self employed cake decorator and caterer for 25 years, retiring in 1983. During World War II, she was an inspector for the Army Air Corps and Army Ordinance and after the war was an inspector for Walsh Kaiser Shipyard in Providence. She was Jill on the “Jack and Jill Show” and “The Walker Dramateers” on Radio Station W.P.A.W. Pawtucket. She was a former member of St. Anthony’s Church in Providence, where she served as a Girl Scout Leader for Troops 24 and 997, a Den Mother and a member of Our Lady of Fatima Society and a member of St. Clement Church in Warwick where she served as a Den Mother and member of the Rosary and Altar Guild. She received the Bishop Gelineau Award for her work with the Catholic Girl Scout Movement.

She was the beloved mother of Kaaren L. Frenette of Coventry, Dennis McDermott of Florida, Kevin J. McDermott of Warwick, Brian W. McDermott of West Warwick and the late Pamela Ann McDermott. Loving grandmother of four; and great-grandmother of one. She was the sister of the late Thomas F. Allen and Margaret E. Blamires.

Relatives and friends are invited to Visitation on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. in The Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Czenstochowa, 445 Washington Street, Coventry. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
