Savage helps Worcester Academy win prep title

Natasha Savage is continuing her winning ways at the prep school ranks.

Savage helped to lead the Warwick Co-op girls’ hockey team to a state title in her freshman season and a Division II championship as a sophomore, before leaving for Worcester Academy after her junior season.

Savage carried that success onto the ice for the Hilltoppers this season.

The junior defenseman was a key component in Worcester Academy capturing the New England Prep School Athletic Council Division II girls’ hockey title a couple weeks ago, as Savage’s steady play on the blue line assisted the Hilltoppers to their 5-3 victory over The Gunnery in the title matchup.

Worcester Academy cruised through the playoff bracket after earning the No. 1 seed with a 20-6-1 regular season record, downing Brooks School, 2-0, in the quarterfinals and Thayer Academy, 5-3, in the semifinals, before edging The Gunnery by the same margin.

The run made school history, as well, marking the first title for the girls’ hockey program.

“Everyone was really excited,” Savage said about the team clinching the school’s first championship. “It was really cool to be a part of.”

Individually, Savage put together an impressive first campaign with Worcester Academy.

A concussion towards the end of the regular season served as a bit of a setback, but when she was on the ice, she had no problem adapting to the level of play at the prep school level.

“It’s so much different,” Savage said of the change from high school to prep. “The game’s so much faster and more skilled.”

Savage’s play this season sparked some interest from some college teams, but there’s plenty of time for more interest to come in with another season in maroon still left.

“A few college teams reached out and I have to reach out to a few more,” Savage said. “I think I’ll hopefully at least be able to play Division III.”

Savage should have a good chance to win her fourth title in five years next winter.

The Hilltoppers will graduate just six players off of this year’s roster, with many of their most prominent players returning for next season.

“I don’t doubt it,” Savage said when asked if she thought Worcester Academy could repeat next season. “Most of our top players are juniors and sophomores now, and us winning a championship should bring in more good players.”
