Schey wins Valentine’s Day makeover from Hair Cuttery

Heather Schey of Providence was the lucky winner of RhodyBeat.com’s Valentine’s Day Makeover Contest. Contestants were required to create an original ending to the poem “Roses are red, violets are blue…” Schey’s entry, “My heart did not beat ’til the day I met you,” swept the competition, getting nearly 700 votes in the final stage of the competition.

Schey’s prize was a free makeover courtesy of the Hair Cuttery Salon at 1600 Greenwich Ave. in Warwick. On Sunday morning, Schey spent hours in Samantha Martin’s salon chair, getting a completely new look.

“I wanted to do something different,” said Schey, who had long, dark hair. “I’m going a lighter brown, and I’m going to be getting it cut. I’m at [Martin’s] mercy.”

Martin said she was honored to be a part of Schey’s makeover.

“When she came in she wasn’t happy with herself or with the way her hair looked,” said Martin. “I told her today was all about her and I was going to turn that frown upside down, and she replied, ‘I trust you.’ When I was done and turned her chair around to see her reaction, it was priceless. It was an amazing feeling for me to know that I made her happy and that I made her feel beautiful again. Heather is a beautiful woman and I’m so happy for her that she won this makeover. She totally deserved it.”

Schey brought along her twin sister, Jeri, who advised her throughout the process.

“I'm so very happy she won this,” said Jeri. “She deserved it.”

After the makeover, Jeri was wowed. Schey debuted her new hairdo at a Providence Bruins game later in the evening.

“It came out awesome,” said Schey of her new look yesterday. “It is much lighter with blonde highlights. It is so different and I have never done anything like this before.”

Schey said she had never had the chance to be pampered like she was at Hair Cuttery.

“Thanks [to] the Beacon for the opportunity to have some fun with my hair and get this whole new look,” she said.

With her sister’s approval, and a smile on her face, there was just one thing that could make the whole makeover even better: “My boyfriend likes it too,” she said.
