School fire alarms 'on line and operational,' says Thornton

Superintendent Philip Thornton provided an email and Facebook update Monday regarding the Norwood and Holliman fire alarm systems that had not been functional for over a month.

The Warwick Fire Department, along with independent fire and safety consultant Jensen Hughes, and the school Facilities Department have completed Phase 1 of the fire system repairs at both schools, Thornton wrote. In addition, “We have also implemented new internal communications protocols to ensure building principals inform both parents and staff when facility issues such as these are identified.”

Norwood and Holliman were “on line” and operational as of April 4 and 7, respectively. In addition, testing was completed Saturday “to the satisfaction” of all involved, including the fire department, he wrote.

“There is still additional work to be done at both schools. There are facility repairs needed district-wide on a variety of levels, including heating and ventilation, roofing, ceiling tiles and the like,” Thornton wrote. “We will continue to work with all involved to insure long overdue repairs and maintenance upgrades are addressed in all our schools in a timely and safe manner.”

Thornton also wrote that he and Mayor Scott Avedisian have discussed a need for regular workshops with the City Council and the School Committee to address school facility repairs, saying he hopes to begin them this summer.

“Only through a collaboration of all involved can we achieve our goals,” Thornton concluded.

We are all relieved to learn that the fire alarms are now working, but the Mayor can't say he was unaware! That's not true. He has always known and he has never cared enough to do anything about it. I have pictures from December of 2015 (2015!) showing green paper taped over a broken fire alarm pull box. What is most notable is that this pull box was IN CITY HALL AT THE TAX ASSESSORS OFFICE! If Avedisian doesn't care enough about the fire safety of his city employees, it's understandable how he could be so dismissive about the schools. That attitude reflected on the School Committee who caused this problem and it took the uproar of the families to correct it. Their outrage was actually what caused the repairs.

For the record, that will never happen with me. People MUST be the top priority. The safety of the students and the employees will always come first. Teachers contracts are next, again focusing on the people involved. Auditorium seats are way down the list and 2018 is right around the corner.

    Happy Easter everyone.
