Scout to hold drive Sunday to collect items for House of Hope

Nicholas Bianco, a member of Troop 1 Conimicut, is close to earning his Eagle Scout rank.

Bianco, a senior at Bishop Hendricken High School and 2013 graduate of St. Kevin School, will hold a one-day personal item drive at the Stop & Shop located at 2470 Warwick Ave. Sunday, May 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. He has also placed collection boxes at St. Kevin Church doors and petitioned the St. Kevin School student body and parishioners to help collect items for the effort.

“I decided to do my project for the homeless” he said. “My time at Bishop Hendricken, St. Kevin School and Boy Scouts has given me a strong foundation for helping those that are in need. I asked Fr. Robert Marciano, Pastor of St. Kevin, if I could run the collection though the church and school. Fr. Marciano said yes and, being a strong supporter of the House of Hope, suggested that we donate the items to them.”

Bianco said his initial intention was to just put collection boxes in some of the local churches and schools but that his project coach, Alan Whittaker, suggested he would have better success if he was to hold a one-day drive at one of the local stores. Whittaker is a great resource to the scouts of Troop 1 Conimicut, having earned his Eagle rank over 53 years ago with the troop.

On May 28, Bianco and his volunteers will hand shoppers a pamphlet explaining the project to them as they enter the store. The flyer will ask them to add one of the required items to their shopping list and to deposit that item into one of the collection boxes that he will have placed at each door as they exit. He has a volunteer force of eight scouts from the troop as well as several adult leaders and family friends to help transport the items to St. Kevin Church after the collection.

With the completion of his Eagle project, Bianco will be one merit badge away from his Eagle rank. He is currently working on that badge and should complete it in mid-June.
