Musicals took a serious turn when Rogers and Hammerstein teamed up. In addition to brilliant and timeless songs, Rogers and Hammerstein musicals gave audiences challenging plots with grown-up themes. See four of the musical partnerships best musicals on the big screen at Warwick Public Library on Thursdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. On October 3, enjoy Oklahoma! (1955), starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae. Farm gal Laurey Williams falls for cowboy Curley McLain while trying to protect herself from farm hand Jud Frye. On October 10, watch Carousel (1956), starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae. Carnival barker Billy Bigelow returns from the hereafter for one day to help his wife Julie and their teenage daughter Louise. On October 17, sit back for The King and I (1956), starring Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr. English widow Anna Leonowens accepts a position as governess and tutor to the many children of King Mongkut of Siam. On October 24, see South Pacific (1958), starring Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush falls in love with French plantation owner Emile De Becque on a South Pacific island during WWII. For more information call 739-5440 x9758.
