Setting the standard
Peter Koch, CEO of Koch Eye Associates and treasurer of the RI Mentoring Partnership Board of Directors, received the first-ever Excellence in Mentoring in America Award for Individual Leadership Jan. 23 at the Library of Congress. The ceremony kicked off the third annual National Mentoring Summit, part of the celebration of National Mentoring Month. In accepting his award, Koch reflected on how "lucky" he has been in his life, with great parents, four years of college and a family. "It was my responsibility to assist the less fortunate ... There are heartbreaking stories of children in need. You all know them. You all see them. Mentoring ignited a passion in me that will never be extinguished, and I am honored and humbled to receive this award." RI Mentoring Partnership President and COO Jo-Ann Schofield says Koch has been invaluable to the organization. She called Koch “a true local hero” who “always finds the time and the energy to do nearly anything we ask if it will help Rhode Island's youth.” Pictured from left are: Koch; David Shapiro, president and CEO of MENTOR (the National Mentoring Partnership); and Schofield.
