Sheila Cecilia Morrissey
Sheila Cecelia Morrissey, 64, of Warwick, passed peacefully March 31, 2012 at her sister Kathleen's home in Silver Spring, Md. surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.
A 30-year commitment to social work began at the Providence Center for Counseling and Psychiatric Services and ended with eight years as Director of Social Services at Bannister House Nursing Home in Providence. During her career she helped hundreds of individuals and families to achieve a better quality of life.
Sheila was born in New Bedford, Mass., a daughter of the late Gerald A. and Helen (Irish) Morrissey. She graduated from Bishop Stang High School in North Dartmouth in 1965. She received her Bachelor of Social Work from Rhode Island College in 1982. Sheila will be remembered for her lifetime of helping others, her great humor, love of family and friends and her passion for animals. She and her beloved dog Sadie spent hours together providing volunteer pet therapy to comfort many people. Her zest for life was contagious to all who knew her.
She is survived by two sisters, Kathleen A. Sheehy and her husband, John, of Maryland and Anne McCann and her husband, Joseph, of Tallahassee, Fla.; a brother, Gerald A. Morrissey Jr. and his wife, of New Bedford, Mass.; nine nieces and nephews and their families, Christian and Monica Sheehy, Justin Sheehy, Andrew Sheehy, Joseph and Stephanie McCann, Timothy McCann, Michael and Tracey Morrissey, Matthew and Kristin Morrissey, Gerald and Kara Morrissey, Renee and James Bradshaw and many loving grandnieces and grandnephews.
Calling hours celebrating her life were held April 8 at Stapleton-Barry-Holdredge Funeral Home, 684 Park Ave., Cranston, with a Mass of Christian Burial April 9 in St. Benedict Church, 135 Beach Ave., Warwick. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery, 2233 Robeson St., Fall River.
