Sherman 3rd grader raises funds for cancer research

Posted

Among her classmates awash in a sea of red clothing and donning a stylish black bow, Isabella Magiera – a third grader at Sherman Elementary School – helped lead a fundraising charge on Thursday to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Neither she nor her mother, Lisa, could say how much had been raised at this point (it’s supposed to remain a secret until the end of the fundraising period), but did say they were already 23 percent of the way towards their goal in only the third of 10 weeks of fundraising running from March 4 to May 11.

The money is being raised on behalf of Marguerite Morris, a Warwick resident and 2019 candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. Morris accepted the nomination and is raising funds in honor of her late friend, John Lamake.

“John was a true inspiration for my family and I,” writes Morris in her fundraising ask letter. “We saw John go through a lot with his battle with Lymphoma. John was the type of person that no matter how he was feeling or what he was doing, when I came around he would stop, say hello and give me a hug and kiss in the cheek.”

Lamake’s health improved after a bone marrow transplant in 2013, but he fell ill again in early 2018, and passed away on Feb. 26, 2018.

On Thursday morning, Isabella and her third-grade classmates all wore red to rally support for the cause. Lisa Magiera and Marguerite manned a table with raffle tickets and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society gear, all to help towards the cause.

The Man/Woman of the Year award is an annual fundraising program driven by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which tasks nominated individuals from around the country to raise money, where each dollar counts as a vote. Whoever earns the most votes at the end of a 10-week fundraising campaign earns the distinction, and all the proceeds go towards cancer research for the Society.

Christine Laramee, their teacher, said that Isabella was destined for great things. As you might imagine, Isabella’s mother agrees.

“I’m so proud of her,” she said, adding that Isabella helps work on the fundraising campaign every night after dinner. “She’s got a heart of gold.”

You can donate directly to Marguerite’s campaign by visiting pages.mwoy.org/ri/ri19/mmorris. Checks can also be made out to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and mailed to 57 Community Road, Warwick, RI 02889.
