Stand Down weekend to provide assistance to veterans

Operation Stand Down RI (OSDRI) will kick off its 19th annual Stand Down Weekend outreach event with opening ceremonies Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. at Diamond Hill State Park in Cumberland.

The annual three-day Stand Down Weekend gives homeless and at-risk veterans a chance to get services they need, including medical, dental, job placement, housing, substance abuse, counseling and legal services at no cost. Veterans are provided food, shelter, clothing and entertainment while staying overnight in a military style encampment. Day passes are available.

This year OSDRI welcomes the Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps/Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team, who will provide medical services to the homeless and at-risk veterans in attendance.

On Friday and Saturday, Operation Stand Down will have, for the first time, DMV services available to veterans who would like to get the new “veteran” status distinction on their license.

Once again, Operation Stand Down Rhode Island has partnered with the Rhode Island Judiciary. Under the leadership of District Court Chief Judge Jeanne E. LaFazia and Chief Magistrate William R. Guglietta, the Rhode Island District Court and Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal will be present and in session on Saturday, Sept. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. Lawyers will be available on the 21st and 22nd to assist veterans before the court and on other matters.

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island is the primary non-profit agency serving homeless and at-risk veterans throughout Rhode Island. Its headquarters is located at 1010 Hartford Avenue, Johnston (1-800-861-8387). The organization’s mission is to combat homelessness among veterans by providing housing as well as educational and financial resources. OSDRI was established in 1993 with the first Stand Down outreach event. Today, the organization has five properties to house veterans and is currently developing a sixth property in Westerly.
