Rhode Island’s first classical ballet company, the State Ballet of Rhode Island, will stage three performances of Coppelia at the Park Theatre on Park Avenue this weekend. The shows will be at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8 and at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9.

The Friday morning performance will be a “pay what you can event,” with a suggested price of $10 per seat. Tickets for the Friday night and Saturday afternoon performances are available online or by phone (401-334-2560) between $25 and $32.50.

The State Ballet is now in their 58th performing season in Rhode Island, having been founded in 1960. Artistic Director Herci Marsden has been a part of the state ballet for all 58 years and is also celebrating her 80th birthday this performing season.

To honor Marsden, the State Ballet also invites attendees to wish her a happy birthday after the final curtain of the Friday night performance.

There will also be two events in conjunction with the performance. On Friday at 6:45 p.m., there will be a champagne, or “Tututini,” toast before the show. All are invited to purchase a hand paitned champagne or martini glass, for which all sale proceeds will go the State Ballet of Rhode Island, a non-profit organization.

The other event will be before the Saturday afternoon show, with a “Tea Time in the Toy Shop” at noon. There will be a meet and greet with performers, tea time snacks, souvenirs, a backstage tour, and a chance to take pictures before the show, all for $20 per person.

The State Ballet of Rhode Island is a non-profit, regional, semi-professional ballet company whose purpose is to promote and maintain the highest standards of dance education and performance.

More information on them can be found at www.stateballet.com and inquiries for this weekend’s events can be made through the Park Theatre either in person, online at parktheatreri.com, or by telephone at 467-7275.
