Movie nights at Rocky Point start June 27

Posted

From infants to seniors, everybody is welcome to attend free Thursday movie nights at Rocky Point.

The Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce is holding its fourth annual Movies in the Park this summer. This means the film screenings throughout the summer will be held every other Thursday starting June 27. The three films being shown June 27, July 11 and July 25 on the 46-foot inflatable movie screen will be Ralph Breaks The Internet, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The films will be showing at the park, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay and lay peacefully in the black of night under the vast array of stars.

“We think it’s important to bring the community together. The outdoor venue is a great venue for the state, and we want people to be aware of the space and utilize it,” said Lauren Slocum, President and CEO of the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce.

The Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to helping businesses grow and build stronger connections with the Rhode Island community. It’s not surprising then the free movie nights are going to have local food trucks.

Participating food trucks include Haven Brothers, Kay’s Ice Cream, Kona Ice of Warwick, Poppy’s Kettle Corn and Waffles, Smoke and Squeal BBQ, and The Village Creek.

“It’s a great way to expose local businesses to the community,” said Slocum. The only exception is Poppy’s, which won’t be present for the second and third screenings on July 11 and July 25.

It’s important to get there before the movie starts if you plan on getting food. The trucks will likely close once the movie starts with the exception of some staying about half way through, said Slocum.

Each event starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends around 11:30 p.m. Prior to each movie, which “we can’t start until it’s dark enough to see the screen,” said Slocum, there will be games, trivia, and a DJ along with the food trucks.

The Presenting sponsor is Wave Federal Credit Union. WPRI 12 is the media sponsor; iHeartRadio B101 is the radio sponsor; CollegeBound Saver and Dave’s Fresh Marketplace are Red Carpet Sponsors; and there are many different lower-level sponsors contributing. The estimated cost of each movie night at the park, excluding some materials that are donated, is around $6,000.

In addition to the already packed night of fun, there will be a raffle before the start of each film. The lucky winner whose ticket gets chosen will receive a themed goody basket based on the night’s showing.

The Chamber will also provide a 20-foot inflatable screen with closed captions for the deaf and hearing impaired. It may very well be the only one in the state, said Slocum.

There will be free parking, but visitors can’t drive in after the screening has started because their headlights might distract other visitors. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to keep comfortable and maybe a jacket just in case it gets chilly later in the night.
