Winman visual arts and technology teacher Susan Morgan (holding flowers) was awarded the title of teacher of the year at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Warwick School Committee for her work in helping secure a $91,000 grant from the Champlin Foundations, which allowed the district to purchase equipment for the school’s new STEAM lab. The STEAM lab includes modern technological learning tools such as 3D printers and computer-aided design (CAD) software. “Susan had a vision for this STEAM lab from the major equipment right down to every nut and bolt, and I'm not exaggerating,” said Mary Tow (to the left of Morgan), Winman Librarian, who nominated Susan for the award. “It really was Sue's vision that started it, and it was so clear…To see the teachers and students excited and working together, teachers collaborating with teachers they've never collaborated with before, it's just so wonderful to see positive change happening in our school and our district.” Also pictured is Joanne Pelletier, Winman Principal (far left), Superintendent Philip Thornton and School Committee Chairwoman Bethany Furtado. I was there. I saw the presentation. I had never met the lady before but I could tell she was and is an exceptional teacher. When she received her award, the audience didn't just give her a standing ovation. They jumped to their feet to do it. She had the idea. She overcame a hundred obstacles to get the new equipment and she deserved all the applause she received.
Congratulations Susan Morgan, for making Warwick look so good to other communities.
