The Toll Gate hockey Titans skated past PSW Co-op, 6-4, on Friday night at Thayer Arena. Toll Gate senior forward Collin Csoszor scored all six goals for the Titans and forward Will Fox assisted on four of them.
“He’s a dynamic offensive player and it shows,” Toll Gate head coach Mike Champagne said of Csoszor. “He gets the puck, he’s got a nose for the net. He plays with speed. When he’s focused, when he’s going north-south, he’s got a lot of moves, and he’s really fast and can put the puck in the net. It all showed tonight, he did a heck of a job. He plays with emotion. You see his heart on his sleeve and when it’s going good, it goes really good. Six goals, so it’s impressive.”
Titans’ senior goalkeeper Joshua Belleville saw 21 shots and stopped 17. PSW’s keeper, sophomore Sean Moreau, stopped 14 of the 20 shots he saw.
“I thought Josh had a really good game,” Champagne said. “He keeps improving. He’s getting better and better. He played with more confidence tonight, made some big saves when we needed it. He did everything you can ask for. He works hard in practice and it shows. He had some big saves last week, and this week he got even better. He got big and really challenged their shooters.”
Five minutes into the contest, Csoszor had a hat trick.
The first goal came two minutes and 17 seconds in when Csoszor put the puck top shelf after a rebound and gave the Titans a 1-0 edge. The assists on that tally came from Fox and Ryan Sabol.
At the 4:05 mark, Csoszor struck again, scoring an unassisted goal after a battle in front, putting the Titans up 2-0.
Less than a minute later, Fox assisted in front to Csoszor, and the forward ripped it past Moreau and extended the Titans’ advantage to 3-0.
“I just came into the game hoping for the best,” Csoszor said. “I had good linemates setting me up perfect, and good shots – good goals.”
PSW cut the deficit to two with one-minute remaining in the opening period. Senior forward Pat Coughlin fired a shot from in front and lit the lamp after an assist from sophomore Dom Raposa.
Forty-six seconds into the second period, Fox fed Csoszor before he skated down and used a wrister to put it past Moreau and gave the Titans a 4-1 lead.
Three minutes later, Belleville stopped shots from PSW forwards Michael Barone and Dennis Gastel.
While the teams were playing 4-on-4 hockey, Coughlin netted his second tally on a laser in front, 7:52 into the second period and pulled PSW within 4-2, a score the teams would take into the second intermission.
One minute and 24 seconds into the final frame, Csoszor raced down and shook his defender before sneaking one into the top shelf to give Toll Gate a 5-2 cushion.
A minute after that, PSW answered when Bennett Hicks found the back of the net after assists from Michael Moreau and Coughlin and got his team within 5-3.
A minute and a half later, Toll Gate fired a barrage of shots on net before Csoszor finally put the biscuit in the basket with an unassisted tally and put Toll Gate up, 6-3.
PSW had the final tally of the game with 1:22 remaining when Hicks and Coughlin assisted to Aidan Beckett, who got PSW within 6-4.
Champagne was happy with his team’s effort in the contest, as the team improved to 2-0 on the young season.
“I thought we had a good game,” Champagne said. “We came out hard and got that early lead, which is nice. They had a really good push back and we responded. Each time we had a chance to put them away, they kept coming back, so there’s some stuff to work on, some things we need to clean up, but all in all, you’ve got to be happy with it. We had a chance for four points and we picked up all four and we improved along the way. That’s all you can really ask.”
Next, the Titans play Lincoln in Smithfield on Friday night at 7 p.m.
