The Toll Gate girl’s basketball team edged host Lincoln 32-15 last week in a tough, defensive battle.

The Titans would take a slim 12-7 lead into the halftime break, but would find more success in the second half as they outpaced Lincoln 20-8 in the final 16 minutes of action to win their second straight game.

Ella Grace Allen led Toll Gate with a game-high nine points, while Emily May and Isabel Donnelly scored six each. Emma Keene-Reinhard led Lincoln with eight points scored.

“In the first half I thought that a lot of our shots were in and out. We had a lot of chances to score but we couldn’t put the ball in the hoop. We struggled a bit offensively. We played really good defense, Emily May came up big for us last night, she shut down Kasey Osbourne who is (Lincoln’s) best player. She scored zero points last night and has been averaging 12 a game. We did quite well defense-wise, rebounding helped us control the tempo of the game,” said Toll Gate coach Owen Paquet after the win.

Paquet felt that his club’s solid performance in transition was key in the second half, opening up the offense and allowing the Titans to operate as a unit.

“Our transition game is still an unknown and we’re working on it every day in practice. It was nice to see Ella Grace Allen step up. They kept pressing us, but we were able to break the press and throw some layups at them in the second,” said Paquet.

The Titans improved to 3-2 with the win, and are keeping pace in the division as the midseason approaches. Paquet has been pleased with his club’s development so far.

“We’re right where we’re supposed to be. The nucleus and chemistry of the team is coming along, it’s slow, progressive movement but it’s getting to where we need it to be. The senior leadership between Emily May and Isabel Donnelly defensively has helped, they’re the captains of this team and we’re going to continue to look at them to be the defensive backbone which has been working for us,” said Paquet, who also hopes that this recent success will create some momentum moving forward.

“It feels good to have some momentum,” said Paquet. “It helps the confidence of the team, it helps the freshman (realize) that they can get double-doubles every game. If this continues then that will be huge for us.”
