Titans eye playoffs

Although the Toll Gate golf team has gotten off to a slow start this spring, the Titans are confident that they will turn things around in the second half and make a postseason run.

Perhaps the Titans’ greatest strength comes from its top-two leaders in RIC-commit Will Niles and Cameron Martin, who have jumped out to strong starts this spring.

“We’ve got some more numbers than last year which is good. We have a pretty steady No.1 and 2 and Will Niles and Cameron Martin. Those two are consistent, good golfers. We have some inexperience from 3-6, but they will get better the more they play,” said Toll Gate coach Bill Russo of his club’s start.

Niles and Martin come from strong golf backgrounds, and will also be competing for spots in the state individual tournament as well.

“Those two guys have plenty of experience. Both of their fathers are club pros, they are both familiar with the game and were consistent forces for us last year. Hopefully they continue to play well and qualify for the individual state tournament as well as the team tournament,” said Russo.

Hard work and practice will be the key for the Titans to turn things around and play their best golf down the stretch, according to Russo.

“Golf is one of those sports where you get out what you put in. Hopefully they will continue to work on their game in the summer, take lessons and want to improve their game,” said Russo. “I think we still have a shot at making the playoffs, that was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season and I still think that it is attainable … we just need to keep working hard and putting the time in each day.”
