The Toll Gate boys lacrosse team edged visiting Cranston East 14-11 last week to remain in the Division III playoff hunt.

Ezra Cox had another outstanding effort for the Titans, leading the way with eight goals and two assists, breaking the school record for single-season goals with 58. The record was last held by Zach Furtado with 54, set back in 2011.

“It feels great, it feels amazing to finally break the record after eight years. Working hard, practicing with the team every day and building the team chemistry has lead to great success all around,” said Cox, who was also happy to lead his team to a hard-fought win. “It was tough, but it felt great to get the win. We need to win out to get better seeding in the playoffs, so we just need to get this next one.”

The Titans and Bolts had a back and forth battle throughout.

Toll Gate would jump ahead to a 4-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes, however, the Bolts would piece together their own 4-0 run and knot the score midway through the second quarter.

The Titans would respond by going on another 4-0 run that spanned into the second half to take an 8-4 lead, but the Bolts would then go on a 5-0 run to take the 9-8 lead late in the third quarter. The Titans would go on their third 4-0 run to regain the lead once again at 12-9. East pushed the score to 12-11 with 3:35 left, but the Titans would get two goals in the final moments to secure the win.

Shaun Bibby added five goals for Toll Gate in the win, while Kyle O’Keefe added another. Jake Sock finished with nine saves in goal for the Titans.

Ethan Mulholland led the Bolts with four goals, while David DaSilva and Patrick Maguire added two each. Brennan Haid, Bryan Belsky and Omar Reyes all chipped in one apiece.

“A game like this is really important. We have been in games that have been blowouts, we have been in games where we have blown big leads, so to have a nice competitive game at the end of the regular season is key ... in the sense of these guys knowing that not every game is going to have a big point differential. It’s good for these guys to know that these games are going to be tight,” said Toll Gate coach Mike Vadney after the win, who was also excited to see Cox break the record. “He has had himself a really nice senior year, it has been a pleasure to watch him. He really wanted that last goal, and I had to tell him to settle, but it eventually went in. It was an ugly goal, but still it was awesome. I have been telling Ezra that I want him to break that record. Zach was a very powerful player, but that’s what records are for.”
