Thursday’s shutout loss to Mount Saint Charles was a rare low point for the Toll Gate boys’ tennis team this spring.
The Titans went into Thursday’s match with the 8-2 Mounties with a 5-2 record, yielding matches in the early going to Middletown/Rogers Co-op and Cranston West.
Toll Gate would suffer its most lopsided defeat of the season against the Mounties, as their depth proved to be too much for the Titans en route to a 7-0 sweep at Winman Junior High School.
The No. 1 doubles match got Mount on the board, with its team of Aidan Keating and Tristan Cox making quick work of Toll Gate’s Logan Heberg and Griffin Hart. The Toll Gate duo gave Keating and Cox a fight in the first set, falling just short, 6-4. But Mount’s pair would cruise to a 6-0 win in set two for the straight sets victory.
From there, Mount took care of business in the singles matches, winning all four in straight sets.
The No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches concluded around the same time, with Paul Resende outlasting Duncan Hart 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 match, before Will Fox dropped a 6-3, 7-5 result to Mitch McCoy at No. 4.
The No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches took a bit longer to conclude, but produced the same result. At No. 1, Mount sophomore Matt Dubois battled to edge Nick Mattioli, 7-5, in the first set, before running away with the second set, 6-3. At No. 2, Toll Gate freshman Henri Snyman gave Mount’s Jacob Lawrence all he could handle at times, but Lawrence’s tremendous defensive play allowed him to escape with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Toll Gate looked to get on the board in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, but Mount continued to show why it’s a Division II title contender, displaying its depth on the doubles courts.
In the No. 2 doubles match, Mount’s duo of Ryan Luisi and Anuj Swaminathan earned a 7-5 set one victory against Toll Gate’s Daniel Tariq and Collin Levin, before cruising to a 6-1 win in set two.
Mount’s Shaan Arora and Justin Aquilante put an emphatic close on an impressive day for the Mounties, gliding past Toll Gate’s Tyler Merrow and Mason Savaria, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Despite the loss on Thursday, Toll Gate is still putting together a standout season. And its 5-3 record should improve this week.
The Titans were set to travel to Chariho (2-8) on Monday, but results were unavailable at press time. They will stay on the road Wednesday at Ponaganset (2-9) for a 3:30 p.m. match, before returning home to host North Smithfield (5-6) on Thursday, also at 3:30 p.m.
