Wyonna Judd began her solo career at the Warwick Musical Theatre, as mother Naomi retired. The Temptations and the Four Seasons were still performing together. WMT also had the Four Tops and the Marvelettes on a twin bill. Huey Lewis and the News and Kathy Mattea also appeared.

The month of July also welcomed Gallagher, Connie Francis and Mary Chapin Carpenter, Peter, Paul and Mary, Frankie Valli, Dion, George Carlin and Willie Nelson. Vince Gill, who was the final performer at the “Tent,” made one of his many appearances. Ah, those were the days!

“Men in Black” was the hot movie. It starred Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Jodie Foster and David Morse starred in “Contact,” a better than average sci-fi movie.

Peter Schaffer’s talky British play, “Lettice and Lovage,” starring Marilyn Murphy Meardon and Ann Brady, was at Brown Summer Theatre. Brown also presented “The Business of Murder” starring Mark Peckham, Russell Berigan and Christina Nicosia, directed by Ed Rondeau.

Neil Simon’s “Come Blow Your Horn,” directed by Cait Calvo, was at Pawtucket’s City Nights Dinner Theatre, where dinner and a show was only $22.

The Narragansett Bay Chorus was holding open auditions at Cranston East.

“Annie” was at Theatre-by-the-Sea, produced that year by Rick Ericson.

Monterey and The Old Grist Mill held their lobster extravaganza every Monday night, with a boiled pound and a half lobster for $7.95. Twins were $14.95.

Warwick’s Brew City Grill had a fish and chips luncheon for $3.95

Crosby, Stills and Nash rocked the sold-out Providence Performing Arts Center on a hot summer night.

The Showcase Cinemas broke ground for their first area stadium seating theatre in Seekonk.
