That's entertainment: Twenty years ago


Zuohuang Chen, music director of the Wichita, Kansas Symphony, was selected as the new music director for the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra.

Woody Harrelson, Rosie Perez and Wesley Snipes starred in a stupid basketball comedy, White Men Can’t Jump. Rodney Dangerfield gave us his double entendre comedy in another stupid comedy, Ladybugs. There was Beethoven, a shaggy dog story, for the kids. Warwick’s own James Woods starred with Dolly Parton and Barrington’s Spaulding Gray in Straight Talk, about a TV talk show. John Goodman played Babe Ruth in The Babe.

Remember Septembers in Cranston and East Greenwich? They had seven special meals for kids ranging from $1.95-$2.99.

We reviewed Papa’s Pizza Patrol (long gone) on Rolfe St. in Cranston, where a pasta, sausage and meatball dinner cost $5.95 and a personal pizza with the works was $4.50.

Cherrystones in Warwick, now the site of Top of the Bay, had fish and chips for $3.95. The upcoming Mother’s Day breakfast buffet was $6.95.

The Old Grist Mill in Seekonk had Petite Top Sirloin for $8.95, and meatloaf for $6.95.

Newport Playhouse presented “Fiddler on the Roof” with “Uncle Matty” Siravo playing Tevye. CCRI had “The Chalk Garden,” starring Mark Alloway of Warwick and Michele M. Webb of Cranston. Brown University had “Travesties.” Community Players did “Bells Are Ringing.” Newgate had “Jaques Brel…” “Ubi Roi” was at Perishable, and Paula Vogel’s “And Baby Makes Three” was at Alias Stage. Trinity’s final play of the season was “Burn This.”

“The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber” fundraiser at PPAC raised $50,000, double the committee’s goal, in what they referred to as “tough economic times.”

The 122nd edition of the Barnum and Bailey/Ringling Brothers Circus was at the Providence Civic Center. The Warwick Beacon and the Cranston Herald ran a contest for free tickets.

Cranston West had a rock concert featuring three local bands: Paradox, Utopia and Molotov.
