The Odd Life of Timothy Green
(Magical, mushy, message movie)
"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" is a bit of an oddity. It is a magical, mushy journey filled with positive messages about being good parents, loving one another and accepting those who are different.
The movie stars young Rhode Islander CJ Adams as the title character who magically appears from the garden to Jim and Cindy Green (Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Green), who yearn for the child they cannot have.
The movie opens with them telling their unbelievable story to adoption counselors. The story is simple, heartwarming and pure fantasy. Frustrated at not being able to have their own, the couple makes a list of all the qualities they would want in a child, put it in a box and bury it in their garden. It is a dark and stormy night as 10-year-old Timothy Green suddenly appears in their kitchen, all muddy and with leaves growing out of his legs.
There's a subplot about the town pencil factory closing, and another about Jim's dad (David Morse) constantly putting him down. They both connect the dots as the story draws to a conclusion.
Timothy makes friends with an older, slightly odd young lady, much to the concern of his parents. Joni (Odeya Rush) sees Timothy's special qualities, and they become soulmates.
While Timothy has so many good qualities like his father, he is as unathletic as can be, leading to his final chance to get into a soccer game with interesting results.
This one is pure fantasy, with those common messages about accepting people who are different and letting them know that it is OK for them to be a bit odd...and it is not cool to be a bully.
Rated PG with good messages for kids and parents.
