Threat of Quinn prompts Rotary to reschedule gala

Could this be the “bad luck of the Irish” if there is such a thing?

On Friday, Riley blew into Rhode Island felling down trees, flooding streets and tragically claiming the life of a Newport man while knocking out power to 150,000 National Grid customers. Now, even before crews have fully restored power, another storm – Quinn – is forecast to bring more wind and wet snow on Wednesday.

It’s enough for the Rotary Club of Warwick to reschedule the 8th annual Gourmet Gala that had been planned for Wednesday evening at the Airport Radisson Hotel on Post Road. It will now be held on March 21.

“I hate to be like the School Department and call everything off and then have everything fine,” said Janis Constantine, who initiated the fundraising gala for the benefit of the club’s charity fund. But she didn’t want to take any chances.

Constantine and co-chair Lara D’Antuono were in a quandary as to what to do in face of Quinn’s forecast arrival Wednesday evening. For starters, Constantine didn’t know what to make of the forecast for a mix of rain and snow with temperatures in the mid-40s.

“As far as I know, it doesn’t snow in the 40s,” she said.

“I think everyone is going a bit daffy because of Friday [which wasn’t forecast to deliver the punch that it did],” she added.

Twenty-five restaurants and vendors were scheduled to participate in Wednesday’s gala. More than 350 tickets have been sold.

Constantine is hopeful participating restaurants will all be able to reschedule for the 21st. As for those who brought tickets she said they won’t have to cope with the weather whatever it delivers.
