Titans fall to Northmen

The Toll Gate football team fell to host North Smithfield-Mount St. Charles 47-6 in a lopsided defeat last Friday evening.

The Titans’ lone score of the contest came with 55 seconds remaining in the contest when quarterback Greyson Pasquina connected with wide receiver Zach DeCorpo for a score. The Titans failed the ensuing point after attempt to set the score to 47-6.

The North Smithfield-MSC defense stifled the Toll Gate offense throughout the contest, and would set the tone early by returning an interception for a touchdown on the opening play from scrimmage. The Northmen offense rolled to three more touchdowns in the first half to set the score to 28-0 at the break.

North Smithfield-MSC would open the second half with another rushing touchdown, and would later force a Toll Gate safety to extend the lead to 36-0. The Northmen would then return the following free kick the distance for a touchdown, and would add a field goal in the fourth quarter to wrap up the victory.

Toll Gate head coach Jim Stringfellow felt that the opening pick-6, as well as execution, was the difference in the loss.

“(North Smithfield-MSC)’s defense was tough and it started from the very first play. Pasquina drops back to pass, slipped, then they intercepted it right at the rip and returned it for a score. It changed the momentum of the game,” said Stringfellow. “They are a great team, a well-coached team, and they executed. We didn’t execute what we wanted to execute.”

Although the Titans were frustrated with the poor showing, they are optimistic moving forward and hope to learn from the loss against one of the division’s best units.

“Hopefully we got it out of our system now and maybe we’ll see them down the road. All we can do now is move forward and get back to practice, we can’t think too much about this game. We just need to fix what we need to fix, get ready for Narragansett and hopefully the turnout will be better than it was today,” said Stringfellow.

The Titans fall to 1-1 on the season overall and 0-1 in league play. They will hit the road to take on Narragansett on Saturday morning, and hope to get back to the basics this week at practice.

“We need to work on tackling, we need to work on the little things,” said Stringfellow. “They’re kids, they’re going to make mistakes at times, you have to expect that. All we can do is move forward and work to get better, that’s all we can do.”
