Titans, Pats go three-four at sectionals
With the state meet scheduled for this weekend, both the Pilgrim and Toll Gate wrestling teams got in solid tune-ups at last Friday and Saturday’s Division II sectionals.
The Titans and Pats, both coming off strong regular seasons, finished in third and fourth place, respectively. Toll Gate had 132.04 points, while Pilgrim had 124.04. Exeter-West Greenwich won the meet with 224.02 points, and Narragansett took second with 142.53. EWG took the D-II title last year as well.
Pilgrim’s Steven Johnston had the best day of any wrestler from either school, as he captured the title at 132 pounds.
No Titan managed a first-place finish, but they did have three wrestlers finish in second.
Aaron Travers finished second at 138, losing 4-1 in the finals to Scituate’s Serge Bouyssou. Dave Navilliat took second at 170, as he was pinned by Narragansett’s Michael Gallagher in the finals. At 182, Toll Gate also got a second-place performance from Edmund Pierce, who fell by a 7-4 decision in the finals to Cranston East’s Derek Mott.
Pilgrim had a second-place finish, as well. Jordan DeSisto took second at 120 after losing a close match to East’s A.J. Collum in the finals.
Toll Gate also got a third place from Austin Medeiros at 126, a fourth place from Joe Martinez at 152, a fifth place from Max Procopio at 132 and sixth-place finishes from Joe Brosnahan at 160 and Colin Higgins at 106.
Pilgrim’s Adam Landroche took third at 113, while Gage Potter was fourth at 220 and Mark Lenz was fourth at 138.
Oluiwaseum Akinnusotu was fifth at 182, while Mike Pereira was fifth at 195.
Next up is the Rhode Island state tournament, which will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. at the Providence Career & Technical Academy, and will continue on Saturday at 11 a.m.
