Titans edge Chieftains

After dropping its previous two games by a combined score of 87-20, the Toll Gate football team rebounded with a 28-15 win over visiting Ponaganset last week at Warwick Vets.

Leading 8-7 with under a minute to play in the first half, the Titans would steal the momentum when an interception by Zachary DeCorpo set the offense up at midfield. Toll Gate quarterback Greyson Pasquina would capitalize and connect with Kenny Morel on a 60-yard strike that would extend the lead to 16-7 at the break and ultimately put the game out of reach for the Chieftains.

“That is a huge win for us, a huge win overall. We figure that Ponaganset is one of the top three or four teams in the division so it’s big,” said Toll Gate head coach Jim Stringfellow. “The interception was big for us and then the screen pass gave us a lot of momentum heading into the second half. That was a great play call and great execution by everybody.”

Pasquina would later add a rushing score in the third quarter, followed by a 24-yard rushing touchdown from Morel to give the Titans the 28-7 lead which was sustained throughout the fourth frame.

Ethan Durand got things rolling for Toll Gate when he scored on a 35-yard run in the first quarter. Ponaganset would force a Titan safety and get two rushing touchdown from Marcus Carpenter in the loss. DeCorpo finished with two interceptions for the Titans.

“We had a great week at practice … everyone was there, they worked hard and bought into what we were doing,” said Stringfellow.

The Titans improved to 1-2 in league play and 2-2 overall this season. Toll Gate will hit the road and travel north to Scituate on Friday afternoon.

“We don’t take any team lightly,” said Stringfellow. “That’s a great team that’s well-coached, and they seem to always beat us even if they have a losing record. Getting this win gives us a lot of momentum. We were on the losing end to Narragansett and got beat up by North Smithfield, so for us to get the win, hopefully that carries over into Scituate this week”
