Streak snapped: Titans shut out by Saints, 3-0

The Toll Gate boys soccer team had its six-game winning streak snapped last week when it fell to visiting St. Ray’s 3-0.

Edgardo Cardona, Jeffrey Codman and Devan Kipyego all scored for St. Ray’s while goalie Andrew Silva recorded three saves in the shutout.

St. Ray’s would get on the board with 3:30 remaining the first half and would quickly score in the second to take the 2-0 lead. The Saints would score again in the final minutes to put the game out of reach for the Titans.

Toll Gate goalie Jayden Pereira racked up 11 saves in net for the Titans in the loss.

“(The Saints) were quick to the ball. They were the best team that we’ve seen all year, they were two-touching, moving together, beating us to the ball, that was kind of the basis of the entire game today. They outplayed us,” said Toll Gate coach Mike Kenney.

The Titans have enjoyed a breakout start in Division III this season, taking a six-game win streak and a 6-1 record into last Thursday’s contest. Although the Titans were disappointed in the defeat, they were happy to have an opportunity to see how they stacked up against some of the state’s top competition.

“We learned that we have a lot of work to do, that’s what we learned. We learned that we can’t wait for the ball to come to us, we have to get to the ball first. We haven’t been pressured like that all year which I think kind of caught us by surprise,” said Kenney. “We just need to regroup, we’ll be fine, we just need to get back to work and regroup and we’ll be good for the rest of the year. (St. Ray’s) played great today so kudos to them.”

Toll Gate faced Rogers on Monday, but the results were not available at press time. Kenney will remain confident in his club as it enters the back half of the regular season.

“We’ve got some things to work on, I’m glad that this came early in the season rather than later when we really need it,” said Kenney. “We know that we have talent and we know what we can do. We just ran into a buzz saw today, but it is what it is.”
