Titans fall to West, 6-1

The Toll Gate girls tennis team fell to visiting Cranston West 6-1 last week at the Winman Middle School courts.

The Lady Titans’ lone win came from Bethany Prendergast, who topped Olivia Martin 6-4, 6-4 in a singles matchup.

West’s Isabella Corso defeated Sabrina Dengel 7-5, 6-2, while teammate Marissa Such topped Mackenzie Blackmer 6-1, 6-1. West’s Rachael Perrotta topped Svetlana Stepanova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

West’s doubles team of Ava Caliri and Isabella Conti beat Isabella Martinez and Kerrin Li 6-1, 6-1, while Savanna Rasombath and Mia Byco beat Jillian Costello and Amanda Perry 6-2, 6-1. Sanjana Ananthula and Olivia Picozzi rounded out the win for West by working past Toll Gate’s Elana Carpaco and Morgan Hobbs 6-0, 6-3.

West coach Jim Lucas has been happy with the team’s start to the season, as well as its resilience after dropping a tough, 4-3 loss to Smithfield earlier in the week.

“We dropped a heartbreaker to Smithfield the other day which would have been nice to win, but we’re 3-2 now which is about where I expected us to be at this point. This is a fantastic group that has worked really hard. They have been working since the summer, we did captain’s practices, they played well, we have some excellent senior captains,” said Lucas.

The West program currently boasts some of the best numbers in the state, rostering 46 girls between varsity and junior varsity. Lucas believes that the team’s experience, as well as its depth, will help it remain competitive throughout the season and possibly compete for a state title.

“It’s working well, this is mostly a returning group from last year. The seniors are fantastic leaders and have been working with the entire group. We have 46 players in the program and having that depth certainly helps,” said Lucas. “I believe that every time we go out there, no matter who we’re facing, that we have a chance to win. That’s a beautiful thing in of itself. We always have a chance and that’s all I can ask for.”
