The Mount St. Charles boys lacrosse team worked past visiting Toll Gate 11-6 last week in a rainy battle on the hill.

The Mounties jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter, but would go on to surge in the second frame by going on a 6-2 run to push the lead to 10-4 at the halftime break. Although the Titans were sharper in the second half and cut into the Mount St. Charles lead, the Mounties were able to hold them off to pick up the 11-6 win.

Ezra Cox led the way for Toll Gate with three goals and three assists, while Kiernan Habershaw added a pair of scores as well. Shawn Bibby and Nate McCamish each added scores, while Jake Sock finished with nine saves.

Nathan LeClaire led the Mounties with three goals and two assists in the victory.

“We were really running on half a defense today. That’s the problem with these vacation-week games, so many kids are away. We had a bunch of long poles absent so it was a challenge, we had some kids playing positions that they just weren’t used to playing. (Mount St. Charles) was also down a few guys today, but we hope to see these guys again with a full complement of players,” said Toll Gate coach Mike Vadney after the loss.

Being down a number of players forced the Titans to jumble their lineup, which was a big part of the team’s struggles in the second quarter, according to Vadney.

“It was mostly just confusion on what was being asked. We had attackers playing midfield, mids playing defense, so I think once they figured out what their roles were we were able to settle in, but by the time we did we were already chasing,” said Vadney. “We switched over to a wheel offense and tried some different things with that. At halftime we talked about how they were playing a wide offense so we tried to narrow our guys. It worked in the second half there and we were able to make a game of it.”

Toll Gate dropped to 3-2 with the loss, but is still in the playoff picture and looks to do some damage moving forward.

“I thought we played a good game overall especially considering we didn’t have half of our guys,” said Vadney. “We are now 3-2 and we’ll have enough opportunities to win some games and get to the playoffs.”
