A Strong Performance

Toll Gate swims to fourth at Division II meet


The Toll Gate girls’ swimming team put forth a strong performance at the Division II Championship Meet on Saturday, picking up 207 points for a fourth-place finish.

Westerly won the meet with 403.5 points, followed by South Kingstown and Cranston East.

The Titans were led by sophomore Mikayla Rogers, who captured first place in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:03.72. Rogers also took second place in the 500 freestyle, and she swam on the second-place 200 medley relay team and the third-place 200 free relay team.

Joining Rogers on both relay teams were Nina Yu, Mackenzie Kelly and Emily Smith.

Kelly also had a productive day, taking third place in the 100 breaststroke and fourth place in the 200 individual medley, to go with her two relay finishes.

Yu was the Titans’ next highest finisher, grabbing fourth in the 200 free and seventh in the 100 back.

Smith also scored points in other events, getting 11th in the 200 free and the 500 free. Molly Turner turned in an eighth-place finish in the 100 breast and a 15th in the 50 free.

’Canes, Pats compete at D-III meet

Both the Pilgrim and Warwick Vets’ swimming teams swam at the Division III meet at Sunday, and both had individual standouts.

As teams, Pilgrim came in seventh with 115 points and Vets came in ninth with 37. Smithfield won the meet with 458 points.

Leading the way was Vets junior Katie Evans.

Evans, who was the ’Canes’ only scorer on the day, took home first place in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:08.05. She also grabbed second place in the 200 individual medley.

Pilgrim’s top performances came from sophomore Taylor Ryan.

Ryan swam to an 10th-place finish in the 100 butterfly and an 11th place in the 200 IM.

Brenna Reeves also placed twice for the Patas, getting 13th in the 500 free and 16th in the 200 free.

The team’s had other place-finishers as well. Casey Adams came in 11th in the 100 butterfly, Courtney Smith took 11th in the 100 back while Alyssa Wilcox took 14th in the same event, Shianne Silva was 15th in the 100 breast and the trio of Caitlyn Pope, Rosario Romare and Christina Cavanagh finished 14-15-16 in the 50 free.
