Steady progression will be key for young Titans

Toll Gate softball will look to rebuild this season.

Last season, the Titans finished with a record of 2-16, and they’ll be entering this spring with an extremely young roster. “We are starting a new year with brand new girls, and this has a big turnover from last season,” Toll Gate head coach Shana Willis said regarding her team this year.

The only senior on the team this year is Jamie Legault, the Titans’ second baseman.

Willis will add a pair of Warwick Vets starters to her roster in Alexis LeBelle and Mallorie Link.

LeBelle and Link will look to create some offense and add a spark to the Titans’ lineup.

Junior Quinn Freeman and sophomore Katelyn Hawes, the teams’ two ace pitchers, will try to lead the way on the defensive side of things. Last season, Freeman was the team’s most potent batter, and if she can carry that into the new season, the Titans could put up some big numbers.

Behind the plate will be Mary Greenwell, while Elizabeth Brousseau will start at shortstop. LeBelle will be at third, and Link will guard centerfield.

Willis has many pieces to play around with and see what works where.

“I have a lot of players that I can move to different positions,” Willis said. “For example, Quinn Freeman can pitch, then I can move her to first base.”

The Titans haven’t started this season the way they had hoped to, losing their first two games against Cumberland (15-0) and East Providence (11-3).

“We started later in the season than we really do, and the weather has not helped,” Willis said on the tough start to the season.

It has been tough in the last couple of weeks to get on a field because of inclement weather, with Willis adding, “Practicing in the gym every day is not the same as out on the field.”

This week, the weather cleared up and the Titans were able to practice on a field. In practice, Willis saw her defense tightening up and improving more and more each day.

Willis’ goals this year are to keep on improving every day and to make a push for the playoffs.

The Titans will look to get their first win today against La Salle Academy at Winslow Park at 4 p.m.
