Top N.E. wrestling teams coming to Vets Saturday

Three of the top wrestling teams in the region will be in Warwick this weekend when Warwick Vets hosts the New England Quad on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Vets will welcome Timberlane, N.H., Danbury, Conn., and Chelmsford, Mass., to town for a rare set of inter-state battles. Timberlane has won five consecutive New England championships and has done it in dominant fashion several times. Danbury finished 25th at New Englands last season and has finished in the top six four times in the last five years. Chelmsford finished 51st last year and was a top-five finisher in 2008.

Vets has three returning state champions who should be players on the New England stage – John Altieri, Nathaniel Colicci and George Schmeider. The ’Canes finished eighth at New Englands last season.

At the Lowell, Mass., Tournament in December – an event that typically is a New England preview – Timberlane finished second, Vets took 10th and Chelmsford grabbed 12th. Timberlane had two champions at Lowell – 106-pounder Tyler Fitzpatrick, 120-pounder Adam Corey. Vets also had two champs – Colicci at 126 and Schmeider at 160. Altieri finished third at 113.
