The Bishop Hendricken outdoor track team only won two events at the Outdoor State Championships this weekend, but its performance across the board resulted in the team’s first title in six years.

The Hawks beat out second-place La Salle by 15 points, scoring 96 total en route to hoisting the trophy.

Jon Celico earned first place in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet, six inches, besting Prout’s Nick Curci by half a foot. The only other victory for the Hawks came in the 4x100 relay, led by Ethan Pezzullo, Jared Grossi, Desmond Bernal and Kwity Paye.

Outside of those wins, Hendricken padded its score with four second-place and four third-place finishes. Connor Sheridan’s distance of 153 feet, six inches in the javelin toss was enough to earn silver, while Mike Bittner’s high jump of six feet, two inches got him second place as well.

Nick Williams continued the string of strong performances when he crossed the line in 50.54 seconds during the 400-meter event to earn second. The Hawks also closed out the day with a second-place performance in the 4x800 relay.

Paye took bronze in the shot put after a toss of 48 feet, 8.25 inches, kicking off a string of three consecutive third-place finishes for Hendricken. Evan Storti claimed third in the discus with a throw that went 141 feet, five inches. Derek Magno’s distance of 152 feet, four inches in the javelin event put him behind Sheridan for third as well.

Ethan Famiano also chipped in points with a third-place time of 15.22 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles.

Dom Parlato took fourth place in the 3000-meter event, just a couple events before Famiano finished fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. The 4x400 relay team added more points with a time of 3:27.84, good for fourth.

There were also a couple of fifth-place finishes for the Hawks. Jared Grossi earned fifth in the 100-meter with a time of 11.22 seconds, while Harry Antone finished in the same spot during the 400-meter. Tom McMahon slotted in fifth during the 3000-meter event with a time of 8:50.6.

Grossi and Mike Kiernan also registered sixth-place finishes in the 200-meter and 3000-meter events, respectively.

Jacobsen victorious, Phillip wins the long jump

Warwick also had a strong showing at the girls’ state championship meet with a couple of first-place finishes from the usual suspects.

Toll Gate senior Courtney Jacobsen continued her dominance in the hammer throw with a distance of 180 feet, one inch. She beat out Ponaganset’s Gianna Rao by nearly seven feet.

Pilgrim’s Kayda Phillip claimed first in the long jump after edging Woonsocket’s Quinn Harlan by less than two inches, 18 feet, 6.25 inches to 18 feet, 4.5 inches. Phillip would also take second in the triple jump.

Jacobsen’s teammate, Ani Armenakyan, finished second in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 10.75 inches.

The Pilgrim 4x100 relay team lost a close race to East Greenwich, coming in second by just more than one-quarter of a second.

Toll Gate’s Alyssa Mathews earned fourth in the javelin with a throw of 108 feet, seven inches. Pilgrim’s Ilana Perdereaux also had a fourth-place finish after tying with Classical’s Bolu Taiwo and Haley Teodoro in the high jump.

Pilgrim added points with a fifth-place finish from Madison Stanley in the triple jump, and sixth-place finishes from Emma Landroche in the 100-meter event and Danika Wayss in the 1500-meter.

Overall, Pilgrim finished in seventh place with a score of 32.3333 points. Toll Gate was not far behind in a tie for ninth place with Barrington after amassing 23 points.
