One pedestrian killed, another hospitalized from vehicular accidents

Two traffic accidents involving pedestrians occurred over the weekend, one claiming the life of an 18-year-old Warwick resident and the other sending a father to the hospital with what have been reported as non-life-threatening injuries.

On Friday, Sept. 22 at around 7:18 p.m., police responded to an accident near 2672 West Shore Road involving a vehicle that struck 18-year-old Kurtis Lee Prosser, of 212 Sandy Lane, as he attempted to cross the road. Prosser was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital shortly after midnight.

Warwick Police Sergeant John Kelly said that rainy and slick weather conditions, combined with low light and Prosser’s dark clothing, contributed to the tragic accident. No charges were filed against the driver, who showed no evidence of impaired or distracted driving, or of excessive speed or other traffic violations. Prosser did not utilize a crosswalk to attempt to traverse the street.

On Saturday, at approximately 8:33 p.m., police responded to 718 Post Road for another report of a pedestrian hit, this time while walking in a crosswalk. A father and son were crossing Post Road when a motorist traveling in the northbound lane struck the father. The child was uninjured in the incident, and the father is being treated at Rhode Island Hospital for injuries that appear to not be life-threatening.

The motorist who struck the adult male is facing two citations, including failure to yield for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failing to adjust to conditions requiring reduced speed.

For law enforcement awareness, the Warwick Police Department is hosting a pedestrian/bicycle crash reconstruction school for active law enforcement re-constructionists. The school will be held Nov. 13-18. Any officer who wishes to partake in the class or any resident with information related to the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at (401) 468-4293; contact Sgt. John Kelly.
