Pats and Titans meet in unified volleyball showdown

In front of packed stands filled with the junior and senior classes at Pilgrim on Tuesday morning, the Pats’ unified volleyball team edged Toll Gate, 3-0, behind set victories of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-10.

Toll Gate got off to a strong start in the first set, winning the first three points behind strong serving from Emily Langevin.

And, after three consecutive points won on Pilgrim’s Max O’Neill’s serve, the Titans went on another 4-0 run with Madison Luisi on serve to give Toll Gate a 7-5 edge.

However, the Pats would battle back in front of their home crowd.

Pilgrim would finish the set on a 9-2 run, sparked by a good return from Cameron Cochran and a pair of aces from Olivia Hauke.

In the second set, Pilgrim powered its way to a 12-4 advantage with an 8-0 run that was eventually ended on a strong return from Toll Gate’s Emily Trahan.

Pilgrim would keep that gap in the second set, though, as the lead ballooned to 19-9 with three aces from O’Neill, before he made it 23-13 with a kill a few minutes later.

A Toll Gate service error on set point would give the home team a 2-0 lead.

Aubrey Yuettner and Kimberlee Mallett combined for five aces early in the third set to push Pilgrim out to a 10-6 lead.

From there, Pilgrim went on a 15-4 run to close out the match.

Pilgrim will end its season at 10:30 a.m. today at Hendricken, while Toll Gate will host Scituate in its season finale at 4 p.m.
