Pilgrim and Hendricken went down to the wire on Thursday afternoon in unified basketball action, with both teams trading baskets late and the Pats tying the game on a floater in the paint from Henry Linphanit with just 3:50 to play.

Hendricken would get baskets in the final minutes from Brook Golding and Matt Mangili, however, leading the Hawks to a 30-26 victory in a hard-fought battle on both sides.

The result handed Pilgrim its first loss of the season, dropping the Pats to 2-1 after a pair of victories to start the spring. Hendricken improved to 3-0 with the win.

Golding and Stephen Baker each scored eight points in the opening half for the Hawks to pace all scorers, while Kimberlee Mallett knocked down three consecutive shots from the same spot for six points in the first half for the visiting Pats.

A driving lay-in from Golding in the opening couple of minutes gave the Hawks an early lead, but Mallett would answer with three straight makes to push Pilgrim out in front, 6-2.

Hendricken would battle back on its home court, though.

Tyler Soares swished a shot with 7:50 left in the first half to give the Hawks a 12-6 advantage, and Baker collected an offensive rebound and converted a putback two minutes later to increase the lead to 10.

Eric Carter answered for Pilgrim late in the half with a make from the top of the key to trim the Pats’ deficit to 22-14 heading into halftime.

Linphanit took over for Pilgrim in the second half, scoring 10 of the team’s 12 points.

He made a transition layup early in the half, before stealing the ball out near the perimeter and taking it in for a basket to close the margin to four points.

Linphanit stayed on the attack when he banked in another shot with 6:30 left to cut Hendricken’s lead to just two points.

Golding netted a jumper shortly after, but Linphanit found the bottom of the net again with 3:50 to go, this time tying the score at 26 and setting up an exciting ending to the contest.

Golding would knock down his seventh field goal of the game with 3:23 left to put Hendricken back out in front, and Mangili gave the Hawks an insurance bucket on a shot near the free throw line with 2:40 to play.

Pilgrim pressed to tie the game in the final two minutes, but the Hawks were able to come away with the victory, 30-26.

The Pats will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Coventry at 3:30 p.m.

Conversely, Hendricken will travel to East Greenwich for a 3:30 p.m. start on Thursday.
