URI's Foster named A-10 Coach of Year

In a poll conducted by the 13 head baseball coaches of the Atlantic-10 Conference, University of Rhode Island skipper Jim Foster was named conference coach of the year on Tuesday.

Foster, a Warwick native, garnered the honor for the first time by leading the Rams to a 30-20 overall record in 2011, bolstered by a 16-8 mark in conference play that earned URI the second seed in the conference tournament.

Foster has also managed to deliver a period of sustained success for the Rhody nine, as he has led the Rams to four consecutive seasons of 30 or more wins, while winning 129 games over the same period. Both marks are without precedent in the history of the program.

The A-10 also announced their All-Conference teams on Tuesday with five URI players receiving honors, including a pair of former Hendricken stars. Fourth-year junior Greg Annarummo was named to the first team, while Jeff Roy capped off his freshman season by being selected to the All-Rookie team.

Annarummo is currently second on the Rams in batting average (.352), runs batted in (34) and slugging percentage (.512). He also has had 17 games in which he recorded multiple hits and ended the regular season with a .378 batting average in conference play, good for fourth in the A-10 among qualified batters.

Roy has quickly become a key asset for URI at the plate by posting a .341 average, which is the highest mark among all freshmen in the conference. He was twice named conference rookie of the week during the season, while also leading the A-10 with 13 bunt singles. Roy has also made a habit of taking the extra base; his five triples are good enough for a share of the team lead with Annarummo.

Next up for the Rams is the Atlantic-10 Conference tournament in Camden, N.J. As a result of their fine regular season, URI received a first-round bye and awaits the winner of the game between third-seeded Dayton and the sixth seed, La Salle. The tilt is scheduled for 3:30 on Thursday afternoon.
