Vets field day 'not a funeral' marks end of school celebration

Vets Principal Gerry Habershaw will host a field day event for Warwick Veterans Memorial High School students tomorrow.

With Vets slated to re-open as a junior high school next school year as part of consolidation, Habershaw said the event is an end of the school celebration.

“This is a celebration more than anything else,” he said. “We’ve been talking all year that this is a celebration, not a funeral, so this will be a time to celebrate the end of the school, have fun with the students, enjoy each other’s company, and end on a high note.”

With Vets being re-purposed as a super junior high school, current Vets high school students will be split between Pilgrim and Toll Gate, while students from Aldrich and Gorton, which are closing, will be split between Winman and Vets.

Habershaw said there would be a number of activities for students, including various obstacle courses, blow-up items such as inflatable sumo suits, and other fun games. Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided for lunch at no cost to students.

Having grown up in the area and gone to school with many of the parents of current students, Habershaw said Vets means a lot to him.

“Being a member of the community, I’m aware of the great history at Vets,” he said. “It’s been an honor to be principal. I have a lot of pride in the teachers and administrators over the last 11 years and we had some great accomplishments.”

Habershaw, who will be principal at Pilgrim High School next year, said many of the Vets families will be following him there, but he said he will miss those that will be going to Toll Gate.

The field day will take place from 11:23 a.m. to 1:51 p.m. in the courtyard at Vets.
