Vets edges Cobras, 2-0

The Warwick Vets baseball team edged Western Hills 2-0 in a tight battle in Cranston last week. Scoreless heading into the seventh inning, the Cobras would botch a suicide squeeze attempt which would result in an error and the eventual game-winning run. Vets would add one more insurance run later in the inning to wrap up the 2-0 decision and improve its record to 7-1 this spring. Mark Woods and Henry Kearns scored Vets’ lone two runs. “Western Hills has gotten off to a good start. The one game we lost to Cole, we did not play well, we weren’t with it mentally, so the kids were ready to go (today). They knew that it would be a tough game so they came out ready to go,” said Vets coach Sean Rainey of the win. The Hurricanes were led by pitcher AJ Ferreira, who threw another gem as he continues to be a force for Vets on the hill this spring. “AJ Ferreira really stepped up to the plate. He pitched even better than I thought he would,” said Rainey. “He’s been a big part of our success this year and we will need to him to continue to throw well.” The Hurricanes, who have averaged double-digit runs per game, were in unusual territory against the Cobras, who held them scoreless for six innings. Rainey believes that the tight game will pay dividends moving forward and will teach Vets how to win in different situations. “I think this will show the kids that we are capable of waiting a tight game. A few of our games have been blowouts so for our team to go into the seventh inning and get the win will be big for us. It helps their confidence, they were excited,” said Rainey, who believes that staying locked in will be the biggest factor for the Hurricanes as they look to secure first place in the standings come playoff time. “Our pitching and our hitting are both pretty good this year. We have a lot of pictures and a lot of kids that can hit,” said Rainey. “We need to continue to work hard every day and stay focus. We need to stay focused and have the same energy as we did against Western Hills.”
