VOWS chopstick auction is Saturday at Pilgrim Senior Center

The Volunteers of Warwick Schools (VOWS) holds their 18th annual chopstick auction this Saturday, November 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pilgrim Senior Center. During this chopstick auction, people can purchase a golden pair of numbered chopsticks for $20 and up to five plain numbered chopsticks for $5. Those planning to attend are advised to get there from noon to 12:30.

Chopsticks are then put in a tumbling barrel during the duration of the auction, while people can bid on gift-baskets and prizes. Afterwards, a numbered chopstick is chosen from the barrel and whomever has that number on the chopstick wins a prize. Money raised by this event will help fund VOWS’ future services and programs.

VOWS was started by Warwick citizens in 1975 in order to provide families with opportunities for positive community engagement, and to help improve the educational needs of Warwick public school students. This non-profit organization provides tutoring services at the elementary level, and vision screening at the secondary level.

Each Warwick public school building has a VOWS volunteer that serves as a Coordinator of Volunteer Services for that school. This Coordinator serves as a link of communication between the VOWS volunteers and the principal of that school. In doing so, an open line of communication is maintained so that children are receiving the best education possible.

Additionally, VOWS developed programs like Child Outreach Developmental Screening, where a child’s developmental skills can be assessed, and Heads Up, which is an early interventional program for second graders about bullying prevention and conflict resolution. Together, these programs help expand communication between the school, the home, and the community.
