Once upon a time when life was uncertain and hard, Hollywood made outlandish screwball comedies to help the world forget its troubles. See four of the best screwballs – from the first to one of the wildest – at Warwick Public Library on Thursdays at 7 p.m.

On March 22, laugh at “You Can’t Take It with You” (1938), starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur. Tony Kirby falls in love with Alice Sycamore, bringing his rich and stuffy family into conflict with her zany family of free spirits.

On March 29, chortle to “His Girl Friday” (1940), starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Newspaper editor Walter Burns conspires to win back his star reporter and wife Hildy Johnson after she divorces him.

On April 5, giggle at “Ball of Fire” (1941), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. Striptease artist Sugarpuss O’Shea hides out with straitlaced Professor Bertram Potts and his fellow researchers to escape from her gangster boyfriend.

On April 12, howl at “Hail the Conquering Hero” (1944), starring Eddie Bracken and William Demarest. When Woodrow Truesmith is discharged from the military for hayfever, a group of determined marines help him save face in his hometown by spinning wild heroic tales.
