Walter E. Card, Jr.


Walter E. Card, Jr., 92, of Tollgate Rd., passed away while surrounded by his loving family on March 13, 2013 at the Coventry Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Dorothy A. (Tarbox) Card and the former husband of the late Helen (Benjamin) Card.

A lifelong resident of Warwick, he was a son of the late Walter E. and Bertha (Jackson) Card. Walter was a Letter Carrier with the US Postal Service for 30 years at the West Warwick branch. He later was Chief of Security at Kent Hospital for 20 years before retiring in 1992. Walter was a United States Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater of War. He received a Purple Heart for his valor and injuries sustained in combat. He belonged to the DAV, he was a 60 year member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #2, West Warwick and Walter was a Past 3rd District Commander of the American Legion.

Walter was the father of David A. Card of Coventry, Barbara A. St. George of Conway, South Carolina, Judith P. Card of Westerly and Gail L. Johnson of Warwick. He was the brother of Mary Jane Nelson and the late Beverly Whitman, Arlene Malbourn, Durward, Leonard and Robert Card. Walter was the grandfather of 12; great-grandfather of 20; and great-great-grandfather of 2.

Relatives and friends are invited to Walter’s Committal Service with military honors was held on March 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery, Exeter.
