DUI

Shortly before 1 a.m. on March 30, Officer Christopher R. Cote was traveling west on Providence Street when he observed a black 2002 Dodge driving eastbound at a high rate of speed. Its headlights were off and sparks were coming from the bottom of the vehicle, according to Cote.

Another officer initiated a motor vehicle stop and Cote made contact with the operator, whose eyes are said to have been bloodshot and watery. The officer also reports detecting a “strong odor of burnt marijuana” emanating from the operator.

The operator is said to have denied drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana that night. He also refused to take part in field sobriety testing, according to Cote.

Tyler T. Defosse, 23, 680 Providence St., West Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. Defosse is said to have refused to submit to a chemical breath test.

Defosse was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and failure to use headlights at a required time. He was later released into the custody of a sober adult.

Just after 12:30 a.m. on April 3, Officer Bruce D. Law was traveling south on Post Road in the area of Cowesett Road when he observed approximately 10 vehicles lined up at a green light in the northbound lane of Post Road.

Law states he initially believed an accident had occurred, but another driver indicated the operator of the lead vehicle appeared to be asleep at the wheel. The officer approached the lead vehicle, a 2013 Audi A6, and observed the operator apparently asleep in the driver’s seat. The vehicle was still running and was in drive.

Law reports he attempted to open the vehicle to put it in park, but the door was locked. He knocked on the window in an attempt to wake the operator but was unsuccessful. The operator eventually awoke after the officer shined his flashlight at the operator and yelled for him to wake up.

According to Law, the operator’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. The operator is said to have followed the officer’s instructions to put the vehicle in park and shut off the engine before he fell back to sleep. The officer then awoke the operator again, at which time he reportedly restarted the vehicle. The operator then followed the officer’s instructions to shut off and exit the vehicle.

Law reports he detected a “strong odor of alcoholic beverages” emanating from the operator and the vehicle. The operator is also said to have had difficulty maintaining his balance.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and consented to field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Mark V. Salmon, 36, 14 Bakers Creek Road, Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. Salmon is said to have consented to a chemical breath test, which reportedly found his blood alcohol content to be significantly above the legal limit.

Salmon was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for parking/stopping where prohibited. He was later released into the custody of a sober adult.

At approximately 1:38 a.m. on April 6, Officer Tyler J. Mobrice responded to the intersection of West Shore Road and Dudley Avenue for a report of a motor vehicle having struck a telephone pole.

At the scene, Mobrice observed a black Ford Fusion on the sidewalk with significant front-end damage. The telephone pole was broken. The operator was still in the vehicle and was speaking with Fire Department personnel.

Mobrice made contact with the operator, whose eyes are said to have been bloodshot and watery. The operator is said to have had slurred speech, and the officer detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier in the evening and consented to field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Jasmine L. McLain, 24, 71 Pine Grove St., Pawtucket, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. McLain is said to have consented to a chemical breath test, which reportedly found her blood alcohol level to be significantly above the legal limit.

McLean was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for a laned roadway violation. She was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

LARCENY

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on March 29, Officer Damian J. Andrews was traveling on Route 2 toward Centerville Road when he observed a 1993 Ford pickup truck under the Centerville bridge with its hazard lights activated.

Andrews made contact with the vehicle’s operator, who is said to have indicated he was scrapping metal located at the scene. The officer indicated that the metal the man was taking was corrugated steel used in the siding of the bridge and advised the man that he needed to return the metal.

Andrews states that a subsequent check indicated the same man was suspected in the theft of a vending machine in Warwick 10 days earlier.

Robert R. Negrotti II, 50, 11 Bettez St., Apt. 1, West Warwick, was arrested on a charge of attempted larceny. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on March 29, Officer Ben L. Bratko responded to a Shand Avenue address for a report of a larceny. The reporting party told Bratko that she had been expecting delivery of a package of nutritional supplements valued at nearly $460, but it never arrived. Post office records indicated the package had been delivered March 27 at approximately 1:30 p.m. The reporting party said she had returned home at approximately 5 p.m. that day and did not observe the package. There were no witnesses and no surveillance video was available, according to Bratko.

DUTY TO STOP

On March 31 at approximately 5:40 p.m., Officer Kyle J. Fitzsimmons responded to a motor vehicle accident in the area of 3030 West Short Road. Dispatch indicated that one of the vehicles involved had left the scene.

In the area of the Islander Restaurant at 2318 West Shore Road, Fitzsimmons observed a dark blue Mercedes station wagon that matched the description of the vehicle that had left the scene of the accident.

A motor vehicle stop was initiated and Fitzsimmons made contact with the operator. The officer states there was a language barrier, but the operator is said to have acknowledged striking another vehicle and continuing without stopping. A passenger in the vehicle is said to have confirmed that as well. The officer also reports observing front-end damage to the Mercedes.

Kerwin Navedo, 29, 332 Manton Ave., Apt. 1, Providence, was arrested and charged with duty to stop for an accident involving an attended vehicle and operating without a license. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was additional cited for operating a vehicle with a cancelled registration and operating without insurance.

WARRANTS

Just after 2:30 p.m. on March 27, Officer Derek Mourato was on a “Click It or Ticket” detail on Bald Hill Road when he observed a southbound vehicle in which a passenger was not wearing a seatbelt. A motor vehicle stop was initiated, and a records check revealed the passenger was wanted on a bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court.

Jennifer L. Alves, 33, 112 Staples Ave., West Warwick, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on March 30, Officer Alfred J. Silveira responded to the Homewood Suites on International Way for a report of a disturbance. Dispatch indicated several people were involved in a physical altercation in a second-floor hallway at the hotel.

At the scene, Silveira met up with Officer Matthew Moretti, who was speaking with male subjects involved in the incident. A records check indicated one of the men was wanted on a pair of bench warrants issued from Superior Court.

Jonathan Torres, 21, 77 Julian Road, Providence, was taken into custody on the warrants and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.
