Police Log - 04/18/19

DUI

Just after 9:30 p.m. on April 9, Officer Anthony J. D’Abrosca was conducting a routine patrol on East Avenue when he observed a vehicle swerve over the center dotter line before jerking back into its lane. A check revealed the registration on the car was associated with another vehicle.

D’Abrosca initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator, who the officer states had “bloodshot, watery eyes” and a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on his breath.

The officer states that the operator had difficulty providing basic paperwork and stumbled upon exiting the vehicle. The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Ryan J. King, 46, 181 Glen Drive, Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Police also say a search of King’s person at the scene of the motor vehicle stop revealed a baggie containing 50 orange pills, which were later identified as amphetamines.

King was charged with driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, laned roadway violations and no insurance.

Just before 10:30 p.m. on April 9, Officer Brian J. Holleran responded to the area of 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident with no injuries.

At the scene, Holleran made contact with the operator of one of the vehicles, a 200 Nissan Maxima with heavy front-end damage. The operator is said to have denied consuming alcohol that evening but was “unsteady on his feet.” Holleran additionally reports the operator had “slurred speech,” “mild bloodshot eyes” and a “moderate odor of alcoholic beverage” on his breath.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Eric J. Knott, 25, 29 Pennsylvania Ave., Apt. 1, West Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Knott was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on April 11, Officer Ali M. Jaafar responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident near the intersection of Warwick Avenue and Wayne Street.

At the scene, Jaafar made contact with the operators of both vehicles – a 2006 Chevy Malibu and a 2006 Chevy Colorado.

The officer reports detecting a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the breath of the Malibu’s driver. The man is also said to have had “severely bloodshot eyes” and “mumbled speech,” and to have had difficulty maintaining his balance.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier in the evening. He is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Remegio G. Salinas, 54, 77 Oniska St., Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Salinas was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and vehicles entering an intersection after a stop/yield sign.

LARCENY

On April 4 at 1:12 p.m., Officer Jeffrey B. Taranto responded to a Parkside Drive residence for a report of a larceny. Dispatch advised that a bicycle had been stolen from an unattached garage.

At the scene, Taranto made contact with the reporting party, who indicated she left the residence at approximately 10 a.m. that morning and inadvertently left the garage door open. When she returned home at approximately 1 p.m., she discovered the bicycle – described as a white and gray Felt hybrid road bike valued at $1,200 – was missing.

A check of the area for the bicycle yielded no results, and none of the surrounding residences had security cameras. The matter was forwarded to detectives.

At approximately 1 p.m. on April 9, Officer Robert J. Canis-Langlais responded to the J&H Automotive Service Center on Brownlee Boulevard for a report of a larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party told Canis-Langlais that a catalytic converter had been stolen from his work truck, a blue 1997 Ford F-350. He said the replacement value of the part was nearly $1,670.

A representative of an adjacent business, Moon’s Auto Body, then approached the officer and indicated three catalytic converters had been stolen from vehicles at his location. The value of those parts was listed as $600.

The report identifies no suspects or witnesses.

SHOPLIFTING

At approximately 6:17 p.m. on April 8, Officer Kyle J. Fitzsimmons responded to the Target store at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident. Dispatch indicated the store had a suspect in custody.

Ftizsimmons made contact with an asset protection specialist at the store, who indicated that just after 6 p.m., she observed a woman select a set of women’s razors, tear open the package and conceal the items in her purse. The woman is said to have then selected other items – including candy, a pair of men’s shoes and a pair of pants – and concealed them in the purse she was carrying and another purse located in her shopping cart.

The woman is said to have then exited the store without making an attempt to pay, at which point she was confronted by the asset prevention specialist and escorted back into the store. At that point, the merchandise was recovered and police were contacted.

Target indicated the total value of the merchandise was nearly $380. The store wished to press charges.

Debra A. Harvey Means, 60, 30 Avon Ave., Warwick, was arrested and charged with shoplifting and shoplifting as a habitual offender. She was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.
