CRASH INTO BUILDING

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on June 21, officers Ben L. Bratko and Timothy J. Tavares responded to the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard for a report of a motor vehicle having driven into the building.

At the scene, the officers found that the vehicle in question – a black Subaru Legacy bearing Rhode Island registration – appeared to have gone over a curb and crashed through a glass door into the front lobby area of the motel. Approximately half of the vehicle was inside the lobby.

Witnesses told police that the operator of the vehicle had passed out while driving but had since regained consciousness and was alert. He was helped out through the passenger side of the vehicle.

One of the witnesses, an employee of the motel, told police that the operator’s foot was on the gas and the car was in drive after the crash, and he turned off the vehicle.

The operator, 63-year-old Richard K. Corley of Warwick – who represents Ward 1 on the Warwick City Council – is said to have told officers he had been at the Motel 6 to meet someone. He said when that person did not arrive, he began to feel sick and decided to leave, at which point he began “feeling faint and dizzy” and passed out behind the wheel.

The officers observed no indications that intoxication played a role in the accident. Corley was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for a medical evaluation.

DUI

Shortly after 6 p.m. on June 30, Officer Tyler M. Stone and other officers responded to Longmeadow Avenue for a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries.

At the scene, stone made contact with the operator of one of the vehicles involved, a white 2019 Nissan Frontier. The vehicle had sustained heavy front-end damage, and witnesses are said to have told police it struck another vehicle on the street.

Stone reports that the operator’s “breath smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage,” his speech was slurred and his eyes were “bloodshot and glossy.” The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol prior to the crash.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Michael J. Clesas, 41, Blackstone, Massachusetts, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He is said to have refused a chemical breath test while at headquarters.

Clesas was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly after 5 p.m. on July 2, Officer Brian J. Holleran responded to the Walmart location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that loss prevention personnel had been observed shoplifting but had left the stolenb merchandise in the store’s vestibule area.

At the scene, Holleran observed a woman matching the description of the suspect. A loss prevention associate also identified the woman as the person involved in the incident. She was detained in the officer’s cruiser.

The loss prevention associate told Holleran that at approximately 4:50 p.m., the woman had been observed selecting a number of items – including multiple pairs of shoes and articles of clothing – and concealing them in a Walmart shopping bag before exiting the store without making any attempt to pay.

Loss prevention personnel met the woman in the store’s vestibule, where she is said to have refused to return inside before rushing through the parking lot toward the garden center. Merchandise with a combined value of more than $183 was recovered.

Danielle Lemieux, 32, 109 Oakland Ave., Cranston, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions based on an active bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Shortly before 9 a.m. on June 28, Officer Aaron L. Steere was conducting a directed patrol at the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard when he observed a gray 2004 Pontiac with a large crack across its windshield leave the parking lot and proceed north on Jefferson Boulevard.

A records check found that the vehicle’s plates were cancelled and did not match its registration. Steere initiated a motor vehicle stop near the Interstate 95 on-ramp and made contact with the operator, who is said to have been unable to provide positive identification.

An initial name and date of birth provided by the operator yielded no data during a records check, according to Steere, and the operator is said to have subsequently admitted to giving a false name before providing his actual identity.

A records check using that name found the operator was wanted on a Woonsocket Police arrest warrant and a bench warrant issued from Superior Court. Additionally, the check revealed the operator’s license was suspended.

Jaime A. Delacruz, 24, 123 Webster St., second floor, Pawtucket, was taken into custody on the warrants and arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and later transported to Superior Court in Providence. He was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on the suspended license charge.

On July 3 at approximately 6:37 p.m., Officer Thomas R. Paine was flagged down while traveling on Sandy Lane near its intersection with Alfred Street.

The operators of two vehicles at the scene indicated they had been involved in an accident without injuries. A records check revealed that the operator of one of the vehicles, a 2006 Nissan Rogue bearing Tennessee registration, had a suspended license and at least two prior convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Keith Richard Jensen, 27, of 62 Curson St., West Warwick, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
